Scent Stacking: How I Layer My Perfume to Smell Good for Hours

I love smelling good and somewhere along the way, simply putting on one perfume stopped being enough for me.

For the past few months, I've been layering my fragrances with perfume oils, different perfumes and even hair perfume to create combinations that feel a little more like me.

And one of my favorite things about it is that I can take fragrances I already own and make them smell completely different depending on what I pair them with.

My current combination is feminine, sweet and warm, and when I layer everything together, I can smell it for hours.

So if you've ever wondered how to layer perfume, what order to apply everything in, or how to make your fragrance last longer, I'm going to tell you exactly what I've been doing.

How I Actually Layer My Perfume

First, I apply my hair perfume.

I know that probably sounds backwards, but for some odd reason, my hair perfume always seems to become the loudest fragrance in the room. 😂 So I've gotten into the habit of starting there.

Next, I add my first layer of perfume, which lately has been Coach.

Then I move on to my perfume oil. The oil I use can vary depending on the day and what kind of scent I'm going for, but most of the time I'm reaching for Candy Shop Heist.

After that, I add my final perfume layer. Most days that's Yara by Lattafa, or another Arabic perfume with a similar sweet, warm fragrance.

And some days I add one more little trick.

I have a body powder that I've sprayed with one of my favorite perfumes. I'll use a little under my arms and around areas like my stomach line or thighs. It's simply another way I like to carry fragrance throughout the day.

And when I put everything together?

I smell good ALL day. 😂

I'm not exaggerating when I say I usually get a compliment or three when I'm wearing my fragrance this way.

But here's what I've learned: perfume layering isn't necessarily about wearing as many fragrances as possible.

It's about finding scents that work together and creating a combination that smells like you.

That's probably my favorite part.

Someone else could own every fragrance I'm wearing and still create a completely different combination with them.

My Current Scent Stack

Holler and Glow Hair Perfume

This is usually where I start.

Hair perfume has become one of my favorite parts of layering because your hair moves throughout the day, and I notice this fragrance every time mine does.

For some reason, this one can become one of the loudest parts of my entire fragrance combination, which is exactly why I like starting with it.

Coach Perfume

Next comes Coach.

This is usually my first traditional perfume layer and helps create the base for everything I'm going to add afterward.

I've also realized that I don't always have to buy a new perfume when I want something different. Sometimes pairing a fragrance I already own with a different oil or perfume completely changes how I experience it.

Candy Shop Heist Perfume Oil

Then comes the perfume oil.

Candy Shop Heist from Eternal Perfume Oils has been one of the oils I've been reaching for in this combination.

I love adding fragrance oils because they give me another layer to play with without simply spraying more and more perfume.

Depending on what I'm wearing that day, I may switch my oil, but Candy Shop Heist has been part of this particular scent stack.

Yara by Lattafa

Yara is typically my final perfume layer.

I've really started enjoying Arabic perfumes, especially when I'm looking for something sweet and warm to complete a fragrance combination.

This is usually the layer that brings everything together for me.

Soft Cloud

Soft Cloud is another fragrance I keep in my rotation when I'm creating these sweeter scent combinations.

That's also the fun part of having a scent stack instead of one signature bottle.

I can change one layer depending on my mood and suddenly the entire combination smells a little different.

You Don't Need My Exact Perfumes to Layer Fragrance

This might actually be the most important part of this post.

You do not need to buy every fragrance I'm using to start perfume layering.

Look at what you already have.

Pull out the perfumes you love, your fragrance oils if you have any, and even your hair perfumes.

Then start experimenting.

I usually gravitate toward fragrances that feel feminine, sweet and warm, so naturally those are the scents that tend to work together best for me.

Your combination might be completely different.

Maybe you love fresh scents.

Maybe you're a floral perfume person.

Maybe you prefer something deeper, woody or more sophisticated.

The goal isn't to smell like me.

The goal is to figure out what makes someone stop you and say:

“Wait... what are you wearing?” 👀

And then you get to decide whether you're sharing your combination. 😂

A Few Things I've Learned From Layering Perfume

One of the biggest things I've learned is to experiment.

Not every perfume needs five layers, and not every fragrance is going to work with another fragrance just because you love them individually.

Start with two:

• Try your favorite perfume with a fragrance oil.
• Try adding a hair perfume.

Wear the combination for a few hours and see how it develops on you.

If you love it, remember the combination.

If you don't, try something different tomorrow.

That's really how I've found some of my favorite scent combinations.

And don't forget that fragrance can smell different as the day goes on, so I don't judge a combination based only on the first few minutes after I spray it.

One of My Little Everyday Luxuries

I talk a lot about enjoying the little things in life, and honestly, fragrance is one of those things for me.

I don't need somewhere special to go before I put on perfume. 

I don't need an event.

I can be getting dressed to run errands, working from home, going shopping or simply having a regular day and still want to smell amazing.

It's one of those small things that makes me feel a little more put together.

And I'm learning that those little things count too.

So yes, I'll probably continue standing in front of my perfume collection mixing things together like a scientist. 😂

And when I find another combination that gets me a compliment or three, I'll share that one too.
